A nice defense of our Church

Keeping with the nice spirit of cooperation and tolerance that Ivan has fostered on this page today with his post below, I would like to link a nice defense of our Church against the vicious attacks by Prop. 8 opponents.  Please read here for more.

Money quote:

Every decent voice needs to stand with the LDS folks against this kind of vicious attack on their faith community because as American citizens, they have exercised their civil rights to vote, organize, and donate.

“Whoever Wins, Chill A Bit”

Whoever Wins, Chill A Bit.

Best election advice ever.  This paragraph is particularly important:

I’m not an Obama fan, particularly, but a lot of people I like and respect are. To treat Obama as something evil or subhuman would not only be disrespectful toward Obama, but toward them. Instead, I hope that if Obama is elected, their assessment of his strengths will turn out to be right, and mine will turn out to be wrong. Likewise, those who don’t like John McCain or Sarah Palin might reflect that by treating Palin and McCain as obviously evil and stupid, they’re disrespecting tens of millions of their fellow Americans who feel otherwise.

That’s truth right there.  One reason I (mostly) stay away from political posts is the disrespect – the assumption that those who disagree are total dupes or willingly participating in evil.

Study directly links steamy TV to teen pregnancies

It seems like basic common sense to most parents, but now there is proof: if your kids watch a lot of steamy, suggestive TV, they are more likely to have sex that results in a teen pregnancy.

Here are the money paragraphs:

The study, which tracked more than 700 12-to-17-year-olds for three years, found that those who viewed the most sexual content on TV were about twice as likely to be involved in a pregnancy as those who saw the least.

“Watching this kind of sexual content on television is a powerful factor in increasing the likelihood of a teen pregnancy,” said lead researcher Anita Chandra. “We found a strong association.” The study is being published today in Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Mommas and Daddies, turn off that (steamy, sex-filled) TV!

Tomorrow is the day for Prop. 8…

…and I simply must recognize the incredible efforts of Guy Murray at Messenger & Advocate. Please take some time to read his posts, look at the “Yes on Prop. 8” art he has put together and offer him some support. The inhabitants of the Great and Spacious Building are definitely on a rampage against Guy, but he is taking it well. If you’d like to comment, please do so on his blog.

Prop 102 in Arizona: “One man. One woman. That’s marriage.”

In the short time leading up to historic votes in Arizona, California and Florida, I find myself pondering the issue of same-gender marriage and the counsel from the Brethren to “maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.”

Here in Arizona, the radio and television commercials in support of Prop 102 proclaim simply, “One Man. One woman. That’s marriage.”

The proposed change to the Arizona state constitution reads, “Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as marriage in this state.”
