What is Creation Ex Nihilo?

March 31st, 2008

Creation of Stars IconI’ve often mentioned that the main difference between us as Mormons and other Christians is our rejection of creation ex nihilo. However a lot of people don’t understand what this means nor why we reject it. For that matter a lot of people don’t quite see what the big deal is. After all, don’t we believe that God created everything?

Reflections of Christ: web site updates

March 30th, 2008

I spoke with Cameron Trejo at church today and he mentioned that the Reflections of Christ web site has been updated with some new features.

First of all, the introductory movie on the site contains several of the pictures from the exhibit. Moreover, and probably my favorite feature–the music from the documentary video! I get chills just listening to the music.

The Temple Stigma

March 27th, 2008

Harvard law professor, Noah Feldman, stated it plainly enough:

[The] secret, sacred temple rites and garments call to mind the church’s murky past . . .

As Dr. Bushman pointed out in early March at Weber State University, one of the determining factors in America’s view of Mormonism is the issue of secrecy which is found in our culture.

Introducing Bryce Haymond

March 27th, 2008

You might have read his insightful and thought-provoking posts at his new blog, Temple Study, or perhaps you will get to know his insightful and thought-provoking posts here at M*. Either way, we think you will enjoy reading Bryce’s posts at either blog!

Bryce grew up in Sandy, Utah, as a Beetdigger. He was the Utah State Sterling Scholar winner in Computer Technology. He served a mission in El Salvador San Salvador East mission from 2000-2002, including 8 months as mission financial secretary. Bryce graduated from Brigham Young University in 2007 with a BFA in Industrial Design and a minor in Ballroom Dance. As a member of the BYU Ballroom Dance Company, he toured 10 countries internationally over 4 years. A self-described Nibleyophile for about 10 years, loves the temple and is the founder of the new Temple Study blog, started in January of 2008. Bryce lives in Pleasant Grove, Utah, with his beautiful wife, daughter, and another child the way!

Dinner with the missionaries

March 26th, 2008

Monday night I told my wife I would take her and the kids out to dinner for her birthday. Nothing special, mind you. Probably just Fuddruckers or somewhere with a play place for the kids.

At 8:30 p.m., my wife announced that she was tired and going to bed early. I was left to fend for myself.

Majerus disses BYU and “magic underwear”

March 25th, 2008

Somehow I missed this one, but apparently former Utah basketball Coach Rick Majerus said the following March 17:

When asked about the BYU-Texas A&M matchup, Majerus responded, “A&M. I don’t like BYU from my Utah days. The magic underwear Mitt and those guys send themselves.”

What Majerus apparently meant to say is that not even Mitt Romney and “magic underwear” would help BYU win. I’m wondering if Rick Majerus will suffer any consequences at all or whether he should.

Shiny Servers and Speed

March 20th, 2008

Due to an increase server load (lots of visitors — good problem to have) we are going to be moving to a new server this weekend. What does this mean for you, the loyal M* fan?

1) The site will be up and down throughout this weekend, starting Friday night.
2) A quicker, speedier M* by the time Monday morning rolls around.

Gotta keep it running smooth. We apologize for the inconvenience!

UPDATE:
We’re up on the new box. Things are humming along now and everything checks out. If you encounter any issues, let us know. Thanks for your patience.

Is Obama’s pastor’s rhetoric relevant?

March 17th, 2008

From a Mormon perspective, the rhetoric of Obama’s pastor is an extremely delicate issue. The reason, of course, is that there are those on the right and left who have basically disqualified a Mormon from being president because of their perceptions of LDS religious beliefs. So a Mormon has to be extremely careful discussing these issues.

But let me try to wade through them as best I can and invite respectful comments.

What Mormonism Offers to the World

March 12th, 2008

I don’t know how many of you read the transcript of Richard Bushman’s talk up at Weber State. If you haven’t you really should. It’s very well written and really makes one think. I’d really like to comment on one paragraph that really stood out to me. It was the question Helen Whitney from last year’s PBS special The Mormons asked but couldn’t get a satisfactory answer to.

“What is it that you have to say that can be used by the rest of the world?”

Romney says he will accept a spot on GOP ticket if asked

March 11th, 2008

I’d still bet against it happening, but there is a lot of talk going around in political circles that McCain may choose Romney as his VP running mate. In this interview, Romney says he would accept if asked.

Will we end up with Romney on the GOP ticket after all?

UPDATE: Sean Hannity’s interview with Romney can be seen here.
