Calm In A Hurry? ~ Parenting Help

The opposite of calm is hurry.  If you feel like you have to hurry all the time, then you will never be calm.  Also, if you feel like you have to hurry through your teaching interactions with your children then you will also have a harder time staying calm.  Don’t let your desire for being efficient ruin your ability to be calm.   William Jordan, the great philosopher  said:

A law that violates freedom

Latter-day Saints, I want you to imagine the following scenario. You are in Arizona. You are driving to the temple with several other members of the ward. You are stopped for speeding (yes, even people on the way to the temple speed sometimes). One of the members of your ward is Hispanic, speaks with an accent and has dark skin. The police come up to your car, spot the man in the backseat with dark skin, and tell him to step out of the car. He smiles in disbelief but obeys the orders from authorities. They ask him to produce his resident alien documentation. This man has lived in the country for decades but was not driving, so he didn’t bring his driver’s license. The only documentation he has is his temple recommend. The man is promptly arrested by police until he can prove he is legal.

Too far-fetched to believe in America? Actually no.

The Uglies, a poem

This is a poem by Camila B., a 14-year-old freshman in high school.

By Camila B.

Sometimes you look in the mirror and The Uglies creep into your brain.
They’re little animals picking at your ears,
entering your head when you feel insecure.
They take over your eyes, clouding you sight,
They take over your mind, confounding your common sense
They scheme destruction, dining on your defeat.
Suddenly your face looks too tired,
Your lips too chapped,
Your teeth too yellow,
and your skin too pasty.
Suddenly your smile takes a U-turn
And your eyes lose their spark.
You look miserable, your heart beats faster, waiting for that darkness the Uglies blind you with.
There’s only one cure.
Close your eyes, count to ten and smile.
Repeat to yourself how wonderful you are,
and when your eyes open, picture the person you really are inside and out,
and thank God that the “Pretties” and “Smileys” and “Happies” overuled the “Uglies”, “Saddies” and “Frownies” before it was too late.
