Shiny Servers and Speed

Due to an increase server load (lots of visitors — good problem to have) we are going to be moving to a new server this weekend. What does this mean for you, the loyal M* fan?

1) The site will be up and down throughout this weekend, starting Friday night.
2) A quicker, speedier M* by the time Monday morning rolls around.

Gotta keep it running smooth. We apologize for the inconvenience!

UPDATE:
We’re up on the new box. Things are humming along now and everything checks out. If you encounter any issues, let us know. Thanks for your patience.

The Tragedy Of Not Having The True Gospel

My friend called me this evening with some very sad news. Her friend, who is only 29 years old, stopped breathing last night. They took him to the hospital where they put him on life support. They have determined that he is brain dead and they will be taking him off life support in the morning.

When you hear news like this, even when you don’t know the person well (or at all) it shocks and saddens you. He has a wife and 2 small children. I can’t imagine what they must be going through. As soon as I heard this, all I could think was, if only they knew, if only they had the comfort of the gospel. I know things are still hard when you do have the gospel, but we have something that so many do not. We have a knowledge of the happiness to come.

He read in a book (Eugene Peterson’s Eat This Book) that “daily” could be translated “fresh” – as in, “give us this day some fresh bread.” He wondered about that, and asked if anyone knew anything else about that translation.

This is actually quite a contentious issue. You’d think that “give us this day our daily bread” is a rather straight forward phrase, but it’s not and it’s likely that any understanding we have may be wrong. I’m going to post my original comment here (with some changes) and then add some additional comments to (hopefully) initiate some discussion:

From the Inconsequential file: Was Jesus a hottie?

Well, this comes from my “doesn’t matter in the slightest for eternal salvation” file, yet apparently this debate gets people fairly worked up. I’ve seen Sunday School classes split over this – and in one case (several years ago) some roommates of mine nearly came to blows. I bring it up because it came up again in church.

Briefly, here are the two sides of the debate (this debate is usually about his mortal ministry, not his current status):
