A man walked into a chapel in Visalia, California, asked for the leader of the local church, walked into the bishop’s office and shot the bishop on Sunday at about 12:30 p.m. California time. Police later shot the assailant about a mile away from the chapel. The bishop was a father of six children. The motive for the shooting is unclear at this time. It’s the economy, stupid
Conservatives of the world, unite! Stop getting distracted by issues that will hurt the movement, which is all about reintroducing common-sense economic principles in government. Anti-immigrant fever and anti-mosque fever will hurt the movement in the long run. Focusing on the economy will help the movement and help rescue the country — and indeed the world — from our current malaise. So my advice is: stop talking about divisive issues that distract us from the final, most important goal.
This is what Reagan did, and it worked. This is what Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, is doing, and it is working again.
Too many callings for too few sisters?
Our ward is going through an interesting phenomenon that may or may not be unique: we have too many callings and not enough sisters. My wife serves in the Relief Society presidency, and the bishopric cannot find sisters to help her out with a half-dozen or so callings that must be filled. The apparent reason: all of the women are serving in young women’s, on the activity committee and, most importantly, primary.
Is this a result of new Church rules that discourage men from teaching primary classes alone?
Adventures of an Ipod newbie
I finally broke down and bought an Ipod Touch (well, actually, my wife got it for me for my birthday). Anyway, given that I am pretty old and set in my ways, I thought the younger generation might be interested in my trials and tribulations with this new-fangled technology.
I have had a Blackberry through T-Mobile for almost four years now, and the e-mail interface on a Blackberry is incredible. I literally could not live my current lifestyle without it. But the problem with Blackberries is that every six months they come out with a new version that is only incrementally better than the last version, and of course you have to buy all new chargers if you buy the new version, a marketing ploy that I hate, so my Blackberry is still three years old, and I’m perfectly fine with it. My company does not support the Apple interface for corporate e-mail, so I am sticking with my Blackberry for the foreseeable future as my primary source of e-mail.
My Ipod Touch will be the supplement to my Blackberry. The Touch is WAAAY cooler than the Blackberry.
Will Mormons condemn Harry Reid’s claim that Hispanics shouldn’t be Republicans?
This post has a very narrow question.
Harry Reid said this: “I don’t know how anyone of Hispanic descent could be a Republican.”
We have seen a lot of condemnation of disgraceful behavior by politicians or political commentators who are Mormon on Mormon-oriented blogs in the past. And most of these condemnations have been justified. My question is simple: will any Mormons, especially Mormons inclined to support Sen. Reid politically, condemn Harry Reid’s hateful comment? The Church as made it clear that there are good people in all political parties and has asked members to treat others with opposing viewpoints with respect and civility. In case you are wondering, this is how one Hispanic Republican responded to Harry Reid’s outrageous remarks.
So, fellow Mormons, will you speak out against Harry Reid’s offensive comment?
