Flaxen cords

Given the California Supreme Court’s decision in favor of same-sex marriage on Thursday, it might be a good time to remind readers of what the Church’s position is on this issue. If you go to the Church web site, one of the few issues on which the Church has taken a strong public stand is the issue of “same-gender attraction.” If you go to that issue, you will be taken to a Church public affairs interview with Elders Oaks and Wickman. If you read this excellent and inspired interview, you will encounter the following statement:

For openers, marriage is neither a matter of politics, nor is it a matter of social policy. Marriage is defined by the Lord Himself. It’s the one institution that is ceremoniously performed by priesthood authority in the temple [and] transcends this world. It is of such profound importance… such a core doctrine of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, of the very purpose of the creation of this earth. One hardly can get past the first page of Genesis without seeing that very clearly. It is not an institution to be tampered with by mankind, and certainly not to be tampered with by those who are doing so simply for their own purposes. There is no such thing in the Lord’s eyes as something called same-gender marriage. Homosexual behavior is and will always remain before the Lord an abominable sin. Calling it something else by virtue of some political definition does not change that reality.

For shame? Jazz play first home Sunday game since 2001

Larry Miller wasn’t there, nor were a lot of other fans. But enough people were there Sunday for the Utah Jazz to beat the Lakers. Here’s what the Times had to say about the Sunday game:

Larry Miller, the Jazz’s owner, was one of the day’s no-shows, giving up his courtside seats because he abstains from nonreligious activities on Sundays in accordance with his Mormon beliefs. The Jazz had not played a Sunday home game since January 2001, recognizing the mismatch in going one-on-one with the Mormon Church.

For shame, NBA, for shame?

Some good publicity just when we need it

This Newsweek article is a very positive look at all of the Mormons who have competed in the reality TV shows recently. I have never seen any of these shows, so this was a huge eye-opener for me. I’ve seen several posts in the Bloggernacle discussing various shows, but I had no idea of the amount of Mormons out there in the various shows. As far away from Utah as I am, I also had no idea that people were actively organizing and rooting for Mormon candidates and that Family Home Evenings were spent watching these shows.

These types of articles are great positive publicity for the Church, especially now when we are once again fighting the PR battle.

Is it sacrilegious to eat in Sacrament meeting?

There was a decent scene in the otherwise forgettable movie “Singles 2nd Ward” in which a mother gives her kids an increasing amount of food during Sacrament meeting. I can’t remember all of the details (see how forgettable the movie is?), but I seem to recall at some point she pulls out milk and cereal, bowls and spoons, etc, and begins serving her kids. And then the irreverent non-Mormon visitor gets hungry and offers one of the kids some money for his sandwich. Anyway, I got a smile out of it (but please don’t write outraged comments telling me how much you hated this movie, because you’ll get no argument from me).

I was thinking about this the other day as my wife pulled out a Clif bar for my two-year-old.
