Remembering Paul Harvey

I still remember the first time I heard Paul Harvey. I was working as a board operator at a local AM radio station in Provo, Utah.

There was something about his voice and the way he delivered the afternoon news and commentary. And I couldn’t resist the radio mystery of The Rest of the Story. The morning program was like an Agatha Christie murder mystery novel, but on the radio–always intriguing and exciting…a real who done it!

When the local ABC affiliate in Phoenix dropped Paul Harvey from their program schedule, I felt a sense of loss for that of an old friend. I missed hearing his voice on the radio, that folksy charm and his professions of undying love for his wife, Lynne, who he lovingly called “Angel”; the seamless transition from content to commercial–the man could pitch most any product convincingly.

Today, I again feel a sense of loss as I say again say goodbye to Paul Harvey, who died February 28, 2009 at the age of 90.

Will Ken Jennings of Jeopardy fame enter Utah politics?

This poll from the Daily Kos shows him running poorly against Sen.  Robert Bennett in a theoretical matchup.   In case you were wondering, Daily Kos claims Ken is a Democrat, but we have reason to believe Ken is actually an Independent.  My question is:  why is Ken even being mentioned?  Has he said he will enter Utah politics?  I did some Googling and could find no announcement that he was being recruited or wanted to test the political waters.  Is it that difficult to find a Democrat in Utah (Geoff B asked rhetorically)?

Just as I was about to press “publish” I saw a post from Ken Jennings today on his blog saying he will not run for this U.S. Senate seat.  You can read it here.  Ken claims he will not run so he can “spend more time with my family. (And when I say “with my family,” I mean, “screwing around on the Internet.”)”  Sounds like a non-denial denial to me.  (Just kidding, Ken).

E-mail from protectmarriage.com

I received the following e-mail today from the Protect Marriage coalition.  To sum up, the California Supreme Court will be hearing oral arguments next week on whether to allow Prop. 8 to stand.  Protect Marriage is calling for a National Day of Prayer on Sunday March 1 and giving some guidelines for people who want to make public demonstrations next week in front of the California Supreme court.  Read more for the letter.

Tears in Heaven: A LDS Perspective on Stillborn and Miscarried Babies

I have a box tucked in the back of a closet with his sonogram, a white Winnie the Pooh onsie he never wore, a statue of a baby angel, a sympathy card and the book Gone to Soon: The Life and Loss of Infants and Unborn Children by Sherri Devashrayee Wittwer. There is no other earthly record of his short life. Some might even debate whether he had been a life at all. Continue reading

Speaking evil of a neighbor

I have recently been troubled by a swirl of rumors and misinformation around an acquaintance of mine regarding a very personal and private matter. Sadly, this individual’s life has become fodder for gossip and evil speaking among neighbors.

Even more troubling is the possibility that information shared in confidence was disseminated to those who had no business knowing the information. Continue reading
