Choir: “When He Comes Again.”

Elder Quentin L. Cook

Tries to attend activities together. For all sporting events they attended, they would attend two musical events.

Guiseppe Verde. Operas. “Nabucco.” Based on Nebuchadnezzar from the Bible. About people in bondage and subjugation. Read Jeremiah in the Bible.

The Book of Mormon starts with this timeframe. When evil choices become dominant, there are serious consequences. People can become enslaved to harmful, addictive drugs but also to harmful, addictive philosophies.

Those who are righteous must help the Church gather his kingdom and gather scattered Israel. Gathering is not a physical gathering but is a spiritual commitment. They were scattered because of unrighteousness and rebellion, but also used the scattering to bless other nations.

Problems today.

1)Addictions. Bad habits.

2)Addictions use up our time. Too much social media (!!!!) How do we preserve time for family?

3)Ideology or political beliefs inconsistent with the Gospel. Gospel truths are rejected or distorted to make them more appealing or compatible with current intellectual trends. We can place ourselves in bondage. Philosophies that criticize or diminish respect for mothers. If we allow our culture to reduce the special relationship that children have with mothers and grandmothers, we will regret it. Health providers being forced to assist in abortions. We must work to improve the moral culture that surrounds us.

The poem “Good Timber” quoted by Pres. Monson at General Conference

“Good Timber” by Douglas Malloch

Good Timber

by Douglas Malloch

The tree that never had to fight
For sun and sky and air and light,
But stood out in the open plain
And always got its share of rain,
Never became a forest king
But lived and died a scrubby thing.

The man who never had to toil
To gain and farm his patch of soil,
Who never had to win his share
Of sun and sky and light and air,
Never became a manly man
But lived and died as he began.

Good timber does not grow with ease:
The stronger wind, the stronger trees;
The further sky, the greater length;
The more the storm, the more the strength.
By sun and cold, by rain and snow,
In trees and men good timbers grow.

Where thickest lies the forest growth,
We find the patriarchs of both.
And they hold counsel with the stars
Whose broken branches show the scars
Of many winds and much of strife.
This is the common law of life.

Notes from General Conference Sunday morning session

President Uchtdorf conducts

Choir: “Rejoice, the Lord is King.”

Invocation: Sister Cheryl A. Esplin of the Primary presidency

Choir: “Master, the Tempest is Raging”

President Eyring

First two grandchildren will be married. Advice. What choices could I make that will lead to happiness and what choices to unhappiness?

The same path to happiness for all people: one plan of happiness: follow all of the commandments of God. Jesus said the great commandment is to love God and love your neighbor.

What choices help you love the Lord with all your heart, soul and mind? Baptism: “I’m clean, I’m clean.”

By the power of the atonement, the effects of sin are wiped away. Accept callings. This is a key to family happiness. Rejecting callings can put you in spiritual peril. While serving others, we are more likely to be in touch with the Holy Ghost.

Marriage: the miracle of becoming one takes time. Gives an example of his parents. Mother and father became united.

Life and families will test us. Family life: we will find great joy and great sorrow and challenges.

God has devised means to save each of his children. Grandmother who loved her grandchild even though he chose a life of crime. She wondered why she had to suffer this. The answer was: “I gave him to you because I knew you would love him.”

Elder Eyring conducting.

Choir: “Like 10,000 Legions Marching.”

Elder L. Tom Perry

Went on hike with primary teacher. The teacher said that memorizing the Articles of Faith would mean nothing more than just a lot of words unless they understood the doctrine.

True doctrine comes from God. False comes from Satan. Paul: “All scriptures is given by inspiration from God.” After we understand the basic doctrines of Christ, the 5th and 6th articles of Faith teach of priesthood authority.

Thruthfulness of the 13 Articles of Faith.

Safe place to raise children: in a Gospel-centered home.

In the last days, perilous times will come. Paul’s warning.

These verses serve as a warning. All can be checked off against the prevailing evidence.

Moroni also warned of our day: “awful situation.” The descriptions that Paul and Moroni give of our day are accurate. For many, it may be discouraging. Still, Pres. Packer is optimistic.

Read the scriptures. All scripture is given by inspiration of God.

Told the story of Joseph F. Smith and his dream about being clean.

To be clean, it is important to repent, see your bishop and return to activity in the Church. The Lord remembers your sins no more when you repent. Quotes Isaiah.

The healing power of Jesus Christ.
