Joshua William Biddulph, a health eight-pound boy, was born on Sunday morning at about 3 a.m. Father and mother and two tired big sisters are doing fine.

Last time I had a baby I wasn’t a member of the Church and kept alive with regular cups of coffee. Any suggestions from the non-caffeinated masses how I can survive this newborn without coffee (I’m trying to cut out the colas also)? I exercise regularly and am in excellent health. I don’t know how anybody has a baby and does not get fired from his job. If you see somebody asleep at the temple, it will probably be me looking for a nice place to rest.

Three weeks ago the most respectable girls in my singles ward threw a raging, extravagant, body-undulating Bollywood party. Fake eyelashes, gallons of hair product, body polish, forty-three different layers of make-up—several of the girls even went on-line and ordered gauzy saris and gaudy jewelry. Wanting someone to improve or change seems to be, at some level, a rejection of who they now are. Is it possible to love someone perfectly, to accept, embrace and treasure them just as they are, yet want and encourage them to change?

I’ve always been fascinated by friends who come from large families or have a lot of extended relatives living nearby. They talk of huge Sunday dinners with aunts, uncles, cousins, and siblings all getting together at least once a month. They tell of holiday traditions that involve extended family gatherings. They have a familiarity with their relatives that allows them to seek them out at any time for almost anything. It sounds so supportive and fun.
