Novak on Romney’s religious test

One of the more respected political commentators, Robert Novak, writes that evangelicals have privately told him that millions of their followers will not vote for Mitt Romney because he is a Mormon, no matter what, even if it means the election of Hillary Clinton.

UPDATE: RICHARD LAND OF THE SOUTH BAPTIST CONVENTION SAID THE FOLLOWING IN A RECENT SEMINAR:

On whether Southern Baptists would vote for Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a Mormon, for president: “If their choice is between a social conservative and a non-social conservative, most of them will vote for a Mormon social conservative, because they’re more concerned about where they stand on the issues and their worldview than they are their personal faith. And I think it’s the way it should be.”

Church again endorses Marriage Protection Amendment

I received the following e-mail today, signed by a host of religious leaders and Elder Nelson. At the same time, the Church web site announced its support of this initiative.

I thought this was a good reminder from the Church web site:

Because national campaigns on moral, social or political issues often become divisive, the Church urges those who participate in public debate — including its own members — to be respectful of each other. While disagreements on matters of principle may be deeply held, an atmosphere of civility and mutual respect is most conducive to the strength of a democratic society.

Missionary withdrawal

I met with my cousin a couple weeks ago, and she was unusually somber. She had just gotten back from an overseas mission a week before, and she turned to me and said, “I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to be here. I want to go back. They said it would get better, but it isn’t getting better, it’s getting worse. I feel like I am on a small break and then I will go back home to my mission.”

I never had my act together enough to go on a mission when I was a young man. Now that I am older, I look forward to going on a mission with my wife in about 20-25 years. But the reality is that I just have no clue about the feelings my cousin shared with me. Can those of you who went on missions sympathize and/or explain?
