Mitt: the anti-immigrant candidate?

In addition to trying to stake out space as the sure social conservative, Mitt Romney is apparently trying to move far to the right on the issue of immigration. Check out this story in today’s Miami Herald. And this op-ed, also in today’s Miami Herald. (Romney is traveling to Miami this weekend and is getting a lot of attention because of that).

For many reasons, I am distressed that Romney is becoming the anti-immigrant candidate. But I also think we need to be clear why.

Jesus and politics

Recently several of the presidential candidates invoked the name of Jesus in support of their political positions.

The topic of Jesus and politics makes for great fodder for pundits and talk show hosts.

A local Phoenix talk show host recently asked his listeners this question: If Jesus was alive today, which party do you think he would be a member of and whom would he support in the 2008 presidential election?

My first thought was- none of the above.

‘That’s so gay’

The phrase ‘that’s so gay’ is the central issue in a civil lawsuit filed by the parents of Rebeka Rice.

Rice, now 18, was a freshman at Santa Rosa’s Maria Carillo High in California in when some classmates were giving her a hard time about her Mormon upbringing, asking her questions like: “Do you have 10 moms?” Rice’s sharp reply: “That’s so gay.”

Battlestar Galactica and “The Cold Equations”

“The Cold Equations” is a classic science fiction story that carefully juxtaposes shopworn clichés with a scientifically rigorous premise, leading to an inevitable conclusion that no one wants, but the reader is ultimately forced to accept. When first published, it caused a minor controversy that manages to spark debate even today.

Battlestar Galactica had a chance to do something similar last night, and instead it walked away. (some spoilers below the fold).
