Guest Post: Empty Nesting – Hoping to Avoid More Bad Assumptions

My parents are from SLC. My mother joined the church when she married my father, basically to please him. Mom served in the Church for several years and, ironically, Dad stopped going to church. After figuring out what was wrong with that picture, Mom joined the Unitarian Universalists. Soon after that, the family relocated to California and Dad started back to church since nobody else was going to take the kids (myself, older brother, younger sister). Dad never did become terribly active (he was painfully shy), but he kept taking us to church. Dad never “pushed” us to go to church – as far as I can remember, we just went along willingly.

Guest Post: The Youngest Testimonies

It is time for me to take upon my role as a childless person instructing parents how to raise their kids. Hopefully my subsequent lynching will be quick and painless. However, this must be done. If it helps, I generally avoid telling parents how to raise their children. Not too long ago I had to teach a Relief Society lesson with a “how to be a better parent” theme, and it was incredibly painful to prepare (happily, it turned out well with a lot class participation from, you know, parents).

Guest Post: The Pledge of Allegiance

For the last couple of years I’ve been increasingly bothered by the pledge of allegiance (I’ve got two boys in scouts, so I’ve had many opportunities to pledge). Just recently, I’ve stumbled across this web page, which explains a bit about the history of the pledge (yes, I know there exists other, perhaps better, sites but this was the most recent I’ve read).

Does it matter that the pledge was instantiated and propagated by a socialist?
