FAIR Conference 2009, Day 1

It’s FAIR Conference time! Today was day 1 and I had a fabulous time. Previously I’ve attended alone, but my sister and brother-in-law joined me this year. They’re not into apologetics, but they are indeed thoughtful members of the Church, and they both greatly enjoyed the day. Proof that non-apologists can enjoy the FAIR conference! (I tell you this in case you missed out but might like to come next year. Also, the presentations should be available soon via mp3, if you’d like to go that route. I’m uncertain on the cost, but hope it isn’t too much as I would like to download a couple of today’s presentations.) Continue reading

Edna Anderson’s funeral was this week

Every once in awhile, you meet someone who really was and is a pioneer, and it puts shame to the “we are all pioneers” platitude we like to tell ourselves.

Edna Anderson’s funeral was this week, and I am not the best person to write a eulogy for her.  But I felt someone ought to let the wider world know.  Edna really was a pioneer, and though she will likely never have her story told over the pulpit at General Conference, it should be. I also made a short poem to be displayed at her visit site, where you can pay your respects.

You know you want to join in on the fun!

The FAIR Conference is a mere 2 weeks away (actually slightly less), Thursday and Friday, August 6-7. Click here to register. You can also register at the door, but it’s cheaper to register now online.

I’m particularly looking forward to Daniel Peterson’s presentation, The Temple as a Place of Ascent to God. He’s always a lively speaker. In addition, cosmology fascinates me, so Ron Hellings’ presentation on Joseph Smith and Modern Cosmology calls to me.

If you find yourself within driving distance of Sandy, Utah, I highly recommend you come and check it out.

But if you’re not within driving distance, you can still participate via video streaming! (Registration for that on the same page.) Isn’t technology neat?

Anxiously engaged in a good cause

D&C 58:27-28 Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness; For the power is in them, wherein they are agents unto themselves. And inasmuch as men do good they shall in nowise lose their reward.

The concept of microcredit was introduced to me many years ago when I was in college. For some reason, I’d seen a flyer in the BYU Kennedy Center (not a normal hangout for me) about a guest speaker, who had come one evening to talk about microcredit. I’ve long since forgotten why I went to that lecture – well written flyer? suggested by a friend or professor? – but I went and was introduced to the concept, which was entirely new to me.

War in the Book of Mormon – Part 2

[See previous posts in this series.]

This post will cover 1 Nephi through Jacob, three substantial books of the Book of Mormon, but there’s so little war-related information in those books that one post is sufficient for my purposes. It’s not that there isn’t any war, of course; it’s just that it’s pretty much only mentioned in passing. This is to be expected since, as Nephi informs us, the history part of their existence, including wars, is recorded on other plates (2 Nephi 5:33). The curiosity about what is on those plates is killing me. Alas.
