Well, the people warning that the normalization of same-sex marriage would create a slippery slope toward legitimizing many other behaviors that destroy traditional marriage have been proven correct once again. This article points out that academics are now openly defending polyamory (group marriage). I would encourage everybody interested in the future of marriage to read it (for the conservative-averse, forget for a second the source and read the article and judge it on its merits alone).

Upgrading the Marriage Cliches
When it comes to choosing a spouse, there are many resources to help you make the decision. Perhaps most ubiquitous of these resources is the collection of pithy truths offered in Sort-of Helpful Cliches on Marriage and Choosing an Eternal Companion, by John Q. Mormon, published by Everyone You Know (24th ed., 2005). This book has everything, from insightful treatments on the “How he treats his mother is how he’ll treat you!” principle, to in-depth discussion of the mysterious issue of “fat potential.”

The Terry Schiavo case seems to be forefront in the media as well as in casual political discussion at the moment. Naturally, someone brought the topic up in my class today, and those who cared to comment (mostly some rather obtuse people to whom it would never occur that others might disagree with them) were appalled that the government would interfere. This woman couldn’t possibly enjoy any kind of decent existence as a vegetable, etc, etc. My gut reaction was to verbally thrash them for their ignorance on several points:

This Boston Phoenix article makes some interesting points, but in the end the author shows he doesn’t have much hands-on knowledge about how our church works. Yes, we can organize pretty well when, for example, a hurricane or flood hits and we need to help people recover. And, yes, we’re mostly Republican. But I can’t see us being as effective politically as he claims.
