Vancouver games’ problems

The Vancouver winter games have been getting a lot of bad press lately. Check out this article for a good summary.  A fair amount of the problems have been simply poor organization.  It appears holding some of the events on a ski resort at a low altitude was, in retrospect, a pretty stupid decision.  Does this make the Salt Lake City games, which were universally applauded for being well-organized, look good in comparison?

I’d like to point out that, despite being a big fan of the Olympics, I have been unable to stand watching more than few minutes of the games because the commercials drive me absolutely batty.  That is not the fault of the Olympic organizers, but instead is simply a financial reality, but I don’t think I’m alone.

  1. I think to some extent this Winter Olympics will forever be marred by the death of Georgian luge slider, Nodar Kumaritashvili.

As for the commercials, I agree with you, Geoff. It’s like watching a Super Bowl marathon, but with bad commercials.

I watched the opening ceremony, but haven’t watched much of the coverage beyond that.

  2. It’s all the fault of global warming. Global warming has caused the games to have very little snow and cold weather.

(That cold weather all over the United States? Also the fault of global warming, I tell you. Everything bad is caused by global warming).

  3. I knew about the snow issues but not the other’s the article mentioned. Normally I turn into a HUGE Olympic zombie, but not this time. Maybe it’s the commericals, maybe it’s Bob Costas and that bad dye job he’s sporting this year. However, that said, I was thankful for the overnight broadcast….tending a fussy baby at 2am is better when I don’t have to watch shamwow commercaials on every station. 🙂

  4. “I have been unable to stand watching more than few minutes of the games because the commercials drive me absolutely batty”

I DVR everything, wait about 2 hours, and never have to watch a commercial. Plus, I can fast-forward through the ice dancing segments. Actually, that’s false. Maybe a better way of saying that is that I *could* fast-forward through those segments if my wife wasn’t watching with me.

  5. Jimbob, we only have on TV in the house, so if we DVR we can’t watch anything else. Plus the Olympics are on so long we don’t know when the good stuff’s coming on. I’m finding the whole experience really frustrating.

  6. Hmm, let’s see.

The SLC games started with a big bribery, sex scandal, and huge debts. I think that any other winter games looks good by comparison.

  7. Re: Brian’s “I think to some extent this Winter Olympics will forever be marred by the death of Georgian luge slider, Nodar Kumaritashvili.”

Yeah, to the same extent that the 1996 Atlanta games were marred by the bombing death of 2 persons.

Listen folks, I suggest you stop casting stones at the Vancouver games.
