I've also seen some of the literature on caring for and interacting with animals and childhood development. The prominence of animal-care metaphors in the scriptures should tell us something about God's relationship with His children, development and progression, life and death, parenthood and stewardship, submission and dependence. Great stuff, Jon.

My sister firmly believes birds are messages from the spirit world. After my niece died, a hummingbird came and sat right on her shoulder. Out of the blue as she sat outside talking to visitors. There were witnesses! Then a few weeks later, she said two owls came and sat on a pole very near her and watched her.

I haven't had any experiences like that, but myabe I wasn't noticing. I think I'd notice if a hummingbird sat on me though.

I love this new blog layout, you guys. Well done.

A lot of developmental psychologists talk about how having animals while growing up is important.

Reminded me of the lessons that President Monson has talked about with pigeons.

What a powerful, yet simple lesson on paying tithing. Thank you for sharing that.

Jon, I like your comparison of the different birds (as well as your declaration of the importance of paying tithing). When I was growing up, we had a dozen chickens and a rooster, and the rooster could get mean. We also had geese (also mean to neighbors, but nice to the owners, kind of like guard dogs). When I grew up I lived next to a person in Miami who had a dozen very, very noisy Macaws. They would squawk all day long, and I actually liked it because they sounded exotic.

In a way I envy the proximity to and responsibility for these animals that you had. Though I am not at all convinced that God regularly micromanages the events of my life, when his hand is visible, boy is it ever so!

Really nice post, J.
