I find this blog very interesting and informative. My g-grandfather/g-grandmother immigrated to Calif. in the late 1800. My family is from the Azores. I have recently became interested in possible Sephardic line in my family. I have done some research and possibly will have a DNA test done. My problem is that my line travels through my fathers mother. I am finding it difficult to find a distant cousin that would be a direct chain through to my g-grandfather Avila/Avala. I do believe that some of the family names in my tree are of Sephardic origin. Some of the names are Rosa,Silva,Silveiria,Teixeira,De Encaracao, Azevedo and Vargas. All of my family through that line are from Sao Jorge Azores. The whole DNA "thing" seems very confusing to me.
Thank you for the information you have provided.

Dear Joanna, reading part III of your Sephardi blog was interesting, to say the least. I am so fascinated with this subject, and impressed by your ability to condense information. I learned a lot. Your exchanges with your commentators put a big smile on my face this Sunday morning! Please keep it up. Love, Marylee

Thanks for taking the time to comment Ben.

Brian, an afternoon at the beach is called "out of town". Our Bishop calls "out of town" if you cross over into the next county.

And what brand of Mormon would be at the beach on a Sunday afternoon? :-) I didn't see any other Mormons at the beach when I was there. ;-)

Thanks for stopping by Brian and taking the time to read.
David H- I thought abut your friend's joke. It is a good one and in a funny way tells the differences. Observant Ashkenazi Jews are very pious, much more so than the Sephardic. Sephardic Jews blend in with the population whether they be Christian or Muslim. So if their Christian neighbors are going to church in the morning, and at the beach in the afternoon, the Sephardim would be at beach too. Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for this.

My knowledge of the distinction between Ashkenazi and Sephardic is very limited.

A friend who is an observant Ashkenazi Jew in Israel told me that there are two kinds of Ashkenazi Jews there--observant and secular. On the Sabbath, observant Jews stay home and attend services, and the secular Jews go to the beach instead. Sephardic Jews, on the other hand, go to services in the morning of the Sabbath and to the beach in the afternoon. He said this with a smile on his face.
