A Savior Is Born

From the Mormon Newsroom, “A Christmas initiative that includes a video in multiple languages and outdoor advertising in New York City’s Times Square was launched today by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The 2015 initiative, “A Savior Is Born,” focuses on finding, knowing and following the teachings of Jesus Christ.”

“We live in a world where the power and influence of God in our daily lives are downplayed and dismissed and where the need for a Savior is ignored and even mocked,” said Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in the December issue of the Church’s Ensign and New Era magazines. “For those who are devoted to the Lord Jesus Christ, there has never been a greater need for us to profess our faith in our Savior, privately and publicly.

“The two-minute video can be found at christmas.mormon.org, as well as on the Gospel Library app. The video features children in locations around the world, including Israel, Los Angeles, New York and Utah, quoting Isaiah (see Isaiah 9:6 and Handel’s Messiah) and expressing their personal belief in Jesus Christ.”

  1. It’s a beautiful video — it would have been even better if the had correctly quoted Isaiah 9:6: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

The omission is jarring to anyone who knows the scripture. I think I understand why they did it (some other Latter-day Saints have omitted it previously), but it would be better, and wholly honest and doctrinally correct, to quote it as written.

But yes, it is a beautiful video.

  2. ji — a bit picky there? It’s a lovely video. Let’s just enjoy it, in the spirit of Christmas?

  3. No, not picky, just an honest sharing of a honest observation reflecting on an honest question.

It is a beautiful video. I hope it is widely shared.

  4. Well, your observation might be right, however, we don’t always need to share every observation we have, even when it’s true. Especially if there is no benefit to others, or if it does not elevate the discussion. You said you thought it was a nice video, there was no need to call it doctrinally incorrect because it wasn’t. With that said, Merry Christmas to you, please share the video with your friends.

  5. I’m sorry.

However, please note that I never called it doctrinally incorrect. It is a beautiful video.

    Merry Christmas!

  6. Alas, it is human nature to ignore the beauty of a lovely woman and focus on the small gnat that is crawling across her cheek.

It is divine to walk up to the woman, do something unobtrusive to force the gnat to leave the woman’s face, and tell her how lovely she looks tonight.
