Software upgrade in progress

September 19th, 2006 by Bryce Inouye

Comments still out of order? Check. Things in sidebar are broken? Check.

Let me know what’s broken for you. I’ll try to get things more or less in order tonight.

Any

Bryce, I like many of the changes made so far. When you click on the Permalink and the envelope, nothing happens.

Plus, I’m a permablogger (member?), not a visitor.

    Geoff, are you logged in?

And which permalink is broken? In the comment listings? or somewhere else? The comment permalinks work for me…

    Bryce I.,

Could you please investigate getting comment numbering turned back on? I think that is very important.

    Hey, now I’m a visitor!

I had to use the email based password reset mechanism to log in. Then I changed my password and the new one worked fine. I am not sure if anything happened to the old one though.

Bryce, now I’m logged in. Still nothing happening when I click on the envelopes.

At least now I’m a member

OK it wasn’t letting me login this morning but it is now.

My login info seems to have been lost - I can’t login and my requests for a lost password aren’t getting me any responses through e-mail.

Plus, I miss the comment numbers something fierce.

I am not sure how / why this changed, but unless there is block type formatting to separate the comment from / meta information line from the comment (ala Slashdot), it seems to me very distracting to have the former come first.

Having the full commenter URL spelled out, especially near the top, also seems distracting, as does indenting the actual comment slightly. Usually signature and meta information is indented or set off from the text, not the other way around. And I mean classical signature information (name, date, title, etc.) not witty little statements.

For the same reason the icon line at the bottom should also be in a block with a different background color, lest it detract the eyes from what the commenter has to say (which is the general issue here - the actual comment needs to stand out above all the other meta information).

I wouldn’t mention this unless I thought the readability of the site was significantly impaired and could be easily improved by some minor formatting changes.

Also didn’t we use to have an icon line for bold, italic, blockquote, etc. above the comment box or am I imagining things?

Same deal with the comment box by the way. It is distracting for it to be indented from the main flow, with all the meta headers (”User”, “Comment text”, “Options” etc. one level to the left). I like the convention where the entry field titles are on the right and in small text, where necessary at all.

I liked it better before. Also, it’s kind of crummy for there to be like, 8 people with the name “member” and everyone else a “visitor.” Dude, you’re already permabloggers. You don’t have to put it after your name on every single comment. It’s the exact internet equivalent of dorky “members only” jackets from the 80s, except thankfully not in that red not-silk.

Anyway, it’s not as nice to read as it was before. The only stuff that’s easy to read is the “Really obviously stated “Comment from:” Someguy [tag stating whether he's a cool insider or not] *silly email icon*” line, most of which you can guess I probably don’t like.

On the other hand, yay for comments being in order again! I heart you all forever.

Comment numbering is back on. Comment ordering still has problems, I think. Gotta go to bed.

Sarah, the members-only jackets will be going to DI soon.

I’ve not seen any new comment numbering problems.
